Bookkeeping for each stage of business

Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy some extra time with loved ones over the holidays and are ready to get to work.

The main focus of my business is to serve the bookkeeping needs of SMALL online business owners.

While a large business can easily afford to outsource its bookkeeping or even hire a full-time accountant, many small business owners are bootstrapping their way to success, doing everything themselves. Those are the business owners I want to support.

Every size business needs to do bookkeeping.

First, you need to know if you are profitable. Second, you need to know your numbers so that you can file your taxes. Whether you receive a 1099 or not, the IRS wants to know about every penny.

Bookkeeping Resources by Stage

If you are just starting out selling on Etsy or Amazon, then I recommend starting with my spreadsheet products that are designed specifically for Etsy Sellers and Amazon Sellers. These spreadsheets are easy to use and provide a quick way to get started with bookkeeping without investing a lot of time or money in your bookkeeping.

Eventually, your business will outgrow a spreadsheet. This tends to happen when the volume of expense transactions increases and it no longer makes sense to spend the time logging them in a spreadsheet. If you have done the work of setting up a separate checking account and credit card for your business, then it’s time to use a bookkeeping program like QuickBooks Online Simple Start. At that, point my Etsy and Amazon tutorial videos can help you get started! (The Amazon video is a new release!)

In the third stage of business growth, business owners realize either: 1) they don’t enjoy doing it or 2) they have no time to do it as their business has taken off. At this stage, the business is profitable, and it makes sense to hire an experienced bookkeeper, like me and my team at Evergold Accounting.

Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know, and having an experienced professional handling your bookkeeping is a big advantage. We are currently taking on a few new clients this busy season who fit our ideal Etsy or Amazon seller small business model. Click here to learn more about my done-for-you bookkeeping services.

Tax Deadline

Tax Deadline - Fourth quarter Federal estimated tax payments are due January 16, 2024. Here’s the IRS page to make your payments. This is also a good time to go ahead and pay your state estimated taxes and take a look at when your sales and use tax payments are due.

Just for Fun

After all the serious tax and bookkeeping stuff, I wanted to share something fun. This Weird Old Book Finder may just keep you occupied for hours. Type in a random query and a related random old book will pop up. I typed in "fashion," and a book from 1833 popped up called The Toilette. The chapter on teeth preservation advised not drinking cold or hot beverages, abstaining from washing the head, and explained that cold feet caused toothaches!

Featured Business

January and February are notoriously slow months for business. By sharing your business in this newsletter, you can get your business or products in front of thousands of new eyes and hopefully give your sales a winter lift.

If you're interested in getting your business in front of potential customers and clients, please fill out this form.

On a Personal Note

It always amazes me how quickly the week between Christmas and New Year’s goes. Each year I think, “Wow, we have a whole week with nothing to do – it’s going to be awesome.” Before I know it, the week is packed with fun and activities.

This year we played games, went ice skating, watched movies, and worked puzzles. My oldest daughter still had swim practice every morning, but now that she can drive, we didn’t have to get up to take her! Bliss!

Is the new BOI report with FinCEN legit? This email contains referral links. See my disclosures. An email subscriber asked me a few weeks ago, “Do I need to file this new BOI report with FinCEN, or is this just a scam?” Great question! This is actually legit and a new required filing for most small business owners. However, to put your mind at ease, just this morning, I did a little research on the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) and filed the form for the two businesses I own in less...

DIY Your Business Taxes This email contains referral links. See my disclosures. Taxes can certainly seem scary and intimidating. The tax code is constantly changing, and there are always exceptions to the exceptions. However, online tax programs like TurboTax are up-to-date on all the ins and outs of the tax code. They know which questions to ask you to complete your taxes accurately and with the biggest refund possible. If you have been filing your federal 1040 tax return yourself, but this...
